Jerome, Arizona |

|
|
Jerome, Arizona is
an old copper mining town with a rich history. Now a haven for
artists, it holds spectacular views and an inspiring environment.

I am a designer who drove
up this mountain on a fall day about 15 years ago.
I knew I was home.
For
most of my life, I have been in the fashion industry. I was a seamstress
for many well known rock and
roll bands in the 60's and 70's. Names included members of
Derek and the Dominoes (Eric Clapton), Wings, and Frank Zappa. |
| |
| |
While
doing much traveling, I became an expert knitter, working with
everything from kite string to ripped up T-shirts to recording tape. My
sweaters and coats received a lot of attention and I won the Designer of
the Year award from Family Circle magazine in the mid-70's. |
|
Many of my garments had
outlandish embellishments created from bottle caps and broken necklaces.
These seemed to naturally evolve into jewelry. |
|
| |
I took a one semester
silversmithing course from a woman who had learned in Sri Lanka. She
taught me the old world ways cutting and soldering. I devoured books on
every technique I could. I worked in anodized aluminum and
thermoplastics, creating color by any method I could find. I studied
enameling and patinas, learning how heat works with the metals. |
|
I treat each design in jewelry
the same as I do with my garments. The finished products are as much fun
to wear as they are to create. The colors are vibrant and rich. |
